1928 - 2011
It is with great sorrow and sadness that we announce the passing of FUMI YAMAMOTO, wife of the late Jerry Yamamoto, on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at the age of 82 years.
Fumi is survived by her children, Terry Yamamoto, Colleen (Barry) Lyster, Byron (Kim Yamamoto; her grandchildren, Trevor (Tobi Reid) and Donovan Reid, Adam and Brandon Zorn, Braden and Brittany Yamamoto, as well as her great-grandchildren Kaeden, Amara and Kaiya Reid; sisters-in-law, Min Kanashiro and Velma Kanashiro, and her brothers John (Alice Kanashiro), Richard (Yuki Kanashiro), her sisters Yeiko Higa, Helen (Alan Low) and Lorraine Sloan.
She is predeceased by her parents, Yasutaro and Kami Kanashiro, her brothers Jim, Jack, and Ken Kanashiro.
Born in Vancouver in August 14, 1928, Fumi was relocated with her family to Alberta in May of 1942 at the age of 14. Though she only took classes until grade 10, leaving school to help support her family, Fumi was a life-long learner. Always reading, enjoying her crossword puzzles, and playing cards with her family and Ladies Angel group, her intelligence was matched only by love for her family.
Fumi married her husband Jerry Yamamoto on June 3, 1950, and moved to Hardieville, where she remained until her passing. Over the years, Fumi worked at Lethbridge Laundry, Higa's Menswear and Jewellery Store, and Safeway, where she enjoyed many friends. Among her favourite pastimes were travelling, knitting and crocheting, but none more so than bingo. Fumi was famous both for her baking and thoughtfulness to everyone. A special thank you to the Edith Cavell staff for the care given to Fumi in her last weeks. She will be dearly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, 703-13 Street North, Lethbridge, with Pastor Jason Anderson officiating. Burial of the urn will follow at Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge. No koden by request.
