GREEN BURIAL SERVICES

At Christensen Salmon Generations Funeral Home, we recognize the diverse community we serve in Southern Alberta and offer a variety of services which include Green Burial packages.

The City of Lethbridge has designated green burial plots in the Royal View Cemetery here in Lethbridge. In a 2019 press conference held by the City of Lethbridge the selected area was described as “a mix of Southern Alberta’s Farm heritage, where there would be a family plot located somewhere on the family farm, where loved ones would be buried directly in the ground, or in a casket that was built with materials from the farm”

The Licensed Funeral Professionals at Christensen Salmon Generations will ensure that all elements required to preserve the essence of a green burial will be explained during your arrangement conference and will we work to understand each individual need, preference, and budget.

The five principles of green burial which are recognized by both the Green Burial Society of Canada and the City of Lethbridge Cemetery Services are as follows:

• No Embalming – decomposition is nature’s way of recycling a body. The human remains are refrigerated and bathed using environmentally sensitive soaps.
• Direct Earth Burial- un-embalmed remains of a decedent are placed/wrapped in a shroud and placed into a casket or alternative form of container that is fully biodegradable.
• Ecological Restoration & Conservation- once the burial has been completed and the grave has been given time to settle the groundcover will be planted using locally indigenous materials.
• Communal Memorialization – there will be no individual memorials or grave markers. Instead, a communal memorialization will be designed using naturally sourced materials.
• Optimize Land Use- there will be minimal infrastructure, temporary roads will be removed, and lot plans will maximize interment capacity.
