Sylvia Brown

After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, Sylvia Brown, age 82, of Magrath, Alberta, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2025, at The Good Samaritan Society Prairie Ridge in Raymond, Alberta.

She leaves behind her beloved children: daughter Kimberly; sons Keith (Christie), David (Rebecca), Quinn (Marlow), and Mark (Amy). Sylvia was a devoted grandmother to 16 beautiful grandchildren and three precious great-grandchildren. She cherished every moment spent singing and crafting with them—being a grandmother was one of the greatest joys of her life.

Sylvia was born on June 15, 1943, into a loving home to Walter Edwin Brown and Vada Crookston Brown. She was raised alongside her siblings, Daniel Walter and Vada Maurine.

Her deep love for music led her to study vocal performance in Lethbridge and Calgary, as well as music therapy in Vancouver and Utah. She sang in numerous choirs, including university choirs and the Royal Canadian Symphony, where she developed a profound appreciation for oratorio music.

Sylvia taught vocal lessons to students of all ages and formed adult choirs, one of which won first place in the CJOC Christmas competition. Many of her students participated in Kiwanis music festivals, a testament to her dedication and teaching talent. A highlight of her musical career was organizing multiple choirs to perform together for Together Now, an event held by CJOC for the 1989 Winter Olympics.

Her conducting talents extended into her church service, where she led a program titled Music Is My Life—a title that captured her belief that “Music reaches the soul and is able to heal it.”

Sylvia was a gifted musician from a young age who shared her love of music generously with everyone she met. Her passion endured through every stage of life, including during her illness. She also had a deep love for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and testified of her Savior through music throughout her life.

Sylvia and her family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Good Sam's for the excellent care she received.

Sylvia will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who were touched by her music and her light.

Family and friends will be holding a special memorial service for Sylvia at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, August 1, 2025. It will be held at Good Samaritan Society - Prairie Ridge in Raymond, AB (328 Broadway S) .

The service will also be streamed online for those who are unable to attend.
