Marilyn Poirier Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Marilyn Helen Poirier (Anderson) on May 31, 2026. She was 82 years young, demonstrating strength and determination to keep going until her final days. She will be missed by her family and extended family, many friends and all that had the privilege of getting to know her. Marilyn was a lovely person who was always kind and thoughtful towards others.

Marilyn was born on February 27, 1944 in New Westminster, BC. She lived in several places in the lower Mainland when she was younger and lived some of her early adult life in Richmond, BC. She met her sweetheart, Real, who worked with her Mother, at the Air Force base and they soon were off to Germany for 5 years. During that time, they were able to travel throughout Europe with various family members who made the long trip to visit. They met many wonderful people, many of whom they maintained long term relationships with throughout the years.

Upon returning to Canada, Marilyn lived in several cities across Canada as her late husband was in the Royal Canadian Air Force. They settled in Lethbridge in 1976 to raise their children and remained there. Their travel days were far from over, as they had children involved in figure skating, hockey, and swimming . Marilyn was an active participant in volunteering for many sporting events and could always be counted on to cheer for any athlete that was competing. Marilyn continued to travel with Real and friends to Europe and across Canada in their motorhome. They had several adventures over the years with funny stories and lots of great laughs with close friends.

For many years, Marilyn worked as a valued employee at Sears and later in life at the Lethbridge Community College Bookstore. She enjoyed helping customers and building lasting friendships with colleagues and patrons alike. Her strong work ethic and friendly personality left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

In retirement, Marilyn volunteered with the Lethbridge Folk Club as well as for the Lethbridge and District Humane Society. Marilyn was always willing to lend a helping hand at events and often found ways to contribute in meaningful ways. She was someone who showed up to help out when needed!

Marilyn found joy in life’s simple pleasures and was happiest when surrounded by family, friends and her dogs.  Marilyn had a special love for dogs and shared her home and heart with many beloved companions throughout her life (Benji, Adee,Riley, Bijou and Bailey). She loved reading and could often be found with a good book in hand. She had an appreciation for flowers and their beauty.

When Marilyn’s grandsons were born in Grande Prairie, they made a concerted effort to see them (even with the long journey braving winter roads and airline delays) and always supported them in their various activities. She was a very loving Grammi and always enjoyed her time with her Grandsons, Jeremy and Tyson.

Marilyn will be remembered for her caring heart, generous spirit, and determined nature. She took a genuine interest in the lives of those around her. More than anything, Marilyn enjoyed sharing stories over coffee, celebrating special occasions, playing games/cards, or simply enjoying the company of others.  She made everyone feel welcome and valued.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the many caregivers and health care professionals who provided compassionate care and support during her stay at West Highlands Center. The staff overall were so helpful and approachable. We also appreciated all of the support for Marilyn through visits with friends and family.

Marilyn is survived by her daughter Jeannine (Earle) Hay, grandsons Jeremy and Tyson, her son Greg (Melissa) Poirier as well as her sister Joan Anderson and nieces Nikki (Ken), Karen and Stacey (Iain).  She was predeceased by her husband Real Poirier, brother and sister in law Bob and Linda Anderson as well as her parents, Bill and Marjorie Anderson.
