John Herbert 'Jack' Duell Obituary

John Herbert ‘Jack’ Duell, beloved husband of the late Geraldine Court Duell, passed away in Lethbridge on Sunday, January 12, 2025, at the age of 92 years.

Jack was born February 10, 1932, in Lethbridge, Alberta. He was the youngest son of Edwin and Ida Duell. He grew up on the family farm south of New Dayton, Alberta and would ride his horse into town where he attended school. He loved being outdoors especially riding and breaking horses.

He fell in love with the local schoolteacher, Geraldine Court. They were married July 4, 1951, in Raymond, Alberta. He continued working with his father and brothers while establishing his own mixed farming operation near the family homestead, where he and Geraldine raised 6 children. In 1977, they bought and moved to a ranch south of Fort Macleod.

While dad enjoyed his work on the farm and ranch, he cherished the time he spent having fun with his family on fishing, sailing, and camping adventures.

In later years, he and Geraldine left Alberta, living briefly in Montana before moving to St. George, Utah. There he served as an ordinance worker in the St. George Temple with Geraldine until they returned to Southern Alberta.

After Geraldine’s passing in October 2017, Jack met Marlene Violet Slade while living at the Columbia Assisted Living Centre. Their 2 dogs were instrumental in their budding friendship. Marlene saw that dad was lonely and asked if she could sit and eat with him at his table. Jack married Marlene August 20, 2018. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Invermere, BC. He especially loved the mountain views. They moved back to Lethbridge and eventually settled at the St. Therese Villa. They enjoyed 6 years together until Marlene passed away on Christmas Day, 2024.

Jack is survived by his sister, Faye French, and his children; David (Susan) Duell, Karen Moore, Barbara (Jim) Sprinkle, John Duell, Susan (Stuart) Foote, and Marilyn (Nolan) Davidsen; and Marlene’s children: Diane (Eltjo) Vander Deen, Bill Slade, Deb (John) Bowen, and Brad Slade. As well as 28 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren and numerous extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Geraldine and 2nd wife Marlene. His parents Edwin and Ida Duell, brothers; Elton, Melvin, and infant sister Lucy. Daughter-in-law, Mary Lynn Duell and son-in-law, Brian Moore.
