Dr. Conway Nelson Brewerton, cherished husband, father, grandfather, and physician, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, January 8th, surrounded by his wife, Carmen Harker Brewerton, and his children.
Conway leaves behind his adored wife of 40 years, Carmen; his children, Christina (Dave) Steed, Dr. Lee (Kristy) Brewerton, Elizabeth (Nick) Shields, Melissa (Parker) Dahl, Dr. Annie Brewerton (John Hagan), Laura Brewerton, and John (Naomi) Brewerton; and 18 cherished grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Steele and Loree Brewerton, his infant brother Michael, and his beloved in-laws, Jack and Peggy Harker.
Born on August 21, 1950 in Magrath, Alberta, Conway was the second of five children. His childhood was filled with adventure, music, and the pursuit of learning. He loved working to achieve remarkable milestones, such as Valedictorian of the Magrath class of 1968 and obtaining his pilot’s license at the age of 16. His love of aviation continued throughout his life, and he treasured the time he spent flying with his professional and veteran pilot father-in-law, Jack Harker. Conway became a Grade 10 Royal Conservatory pianist, a recipient of the Queen's Scout Award, and a certified Master SCUBA diver.
Conway’s faith was central to his life. At 19, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Hong Kong, where he developed a lifelong appreciation of Chinese culture, language, and cuisine. His testimony of Jesus Christ remained a guiding force throughout his life. He served faithfully in many church callings, including bishop of the Magrath 3rd ward and later as a gospel doctrine teacher, a duty he especially treasured. Most of all, Conway loved serving as a home teacher.
Conway pursued a remarkable medical career, graduating with distinction from the University of Alberta’s medical program in 1977. His work took him across the globe, including Virginia, Maryland, Texas, Mississippi, the Marshall Islands, Saudi Arabia, and Alberta. He earned a Master’s in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University and trained in anesthesia and hyperbaric medicine. Highlights of his career included serving as Medical Officer of Health for the Red Deer and Chinook regions and acting as personal physician to Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia.
Conway was a passionate advocate for public health in southern Alberta, striving to ensure equitable care for all. His personal battle with cancer and enduring the long-term effects of radiation therapy deepened his empathy for patients and fueled his dedication to their care.
Conway’s greatest love in life was his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather. He loved sharing books, movies, and meaningful conversations with his loved ones. An avid reader, he filled his home with an extensive library and passed on his love of learning to his children. He also enjoyed a lifelong passion for cinema, founded in early memories of working as a boy with his Grandpa Lee who owned the Raymond theatre.
Conway’s life was a testament to discipline, hard work, and faith. His family and friends will remember his quiet strength, his love of teaching and learning, and his example of perseverance and devotion.
Conway did not seek the limelight in mortality. He found comfort in quiet moments, one-on-one connections, and the pursuit of perfection in his actions. In death, he was the same—at home, in peace and quiet, surrounded by those he loved and who loved him.
The Funeral Service will be held at the Lethbridge Alberta Stake Centre of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (2410-28 St. S), on Saturday, January 11th at 11:00am. Friends may meet the family prior to the service from 10:00 -10:45am. Burial will take place at the Magrath Cemetery.
Live stream will be available and a link will appear below this obituary 15 minutes before service start.
