CROOK

VIRGINIA CROOK passed away at the age of 86 years at the St. Michael’s Palliative Care Unit on Thursday, August 11, 2016.

She was born in Spokane, Washington on December 18, 1929 but grew up in Pincher Creek, Alberta on her Grandfather Sandgren’s farm after her father died when she was 1 year old. She said that the farm was like a small community with many hired workers, a cookhouse, blacksmith shop, large horse barn and many other buildings. She went to Spokane every summer to spend time with her Grandma Sandgren.

During her adolescent years she attended school in Pincher Creek, traveling there by horse and cart or sled. She said that she loved school and her friends and enjoyed ball games, tap-dancing and dances.

After attending the University of Calgary she taught for three years before getting married to Francis Crook and living on a farm on Crook Road, just south of Pincher Creek. Virginia and Francis had five children and raised them on the farm until 1974 when they moved to Lethbridge, Alberta. Francis passed away in 1986 and Virginia kept Lethbridge as her home until her passing. She worked in the Lethbridge Association for Community Living office as the receptionist/secretary for many years.

Virginia is survived by her children: Doug (Cathy) Crook of Pincher Creek, Joanne (Allan Boswell) Crook of Priddis, Byron (Cyndie) Crook of Stony Plain, and Stan Crook of Lethbridge. She is also survived by her son-in-law Murray (Charlotte) Taylor of Winnipeg and 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, her sister Marion Petersen, a cousin and special friend Mary (Marty) Hyder and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Francis, Virginia was also predeceased by her brother Gordon Carlson, her daughter Bev Taylor, grandchildren Corey and Stefanie and a still born granddaughter, Katie Taylor.

Virginia said that one of her greatest accomplishments were her five wonderful children but her children feel that her greatest accomplishment was being an amazing, supportive and committed mother. She was deeply loved and will be missed but not forgotten.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, 703 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge.

Memorial donations may be made to Lethbridge Association for Community Living, 527 – 6th Street S. Lethbridge AB T1J 2E1 or to the Special Olympics Alberta, 230 – 207 – 13th Street North, Lethbridge, AB, T1H 2R6.
