STANLEY ELWOOD MAXWELL beloved husband of Colleen Peterson Maxwell of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully at the Raymond Hospital on April 28, 2008 at the age of 82. Besides his loving wife he is survived by his children; Randy (Linda) of Lethbridge, Lorie of Lethbridge, Marty (Jeanne) of Bakersfield, California, Bryan (Debbie) of Victoria, BC, Greg (Lisa) of Magrath, Brent (Julie) of Raymond, Scott (Cathy) of Lethbridge, as well as 22 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He also leaves to mourn his brother T.J. and his sisters Muriel and Beverly from Ontario, as well as brothers and sisters-in-law and many numerous nieces and nephews. Stanley was born to Clarence James Maxwell and Jessie Isabelle Knight on September 5, 1925 in North Bay, Ontario. Stan was a paratrooper in WW2. After the war was over he came to Lethbridge to play hockey for the Lethbridge Maple Leafs where he met the love of his life Colleen Peterson. They were married on November 12, 1949. Besides being a devoted husband and father he had a great love for sports. He had many accomplishments in both baseball and hockey and is a member of both the North Bay, Ontario and Lethbridge Sports Halls of Fame. Stan also received many awards throughout his sporting career and was especially honored to be named Honorary Captain for the 1988 Men's Canadian Olympic Hockey Team. Stan was an exceptional fastball player and was a major contributor to many championship teams in Ontario and after taking up residence in Lethbridge continued to excel with many teams in this area. Stan's first love was hockey. He began his career with the home town North Bay Trappers and then enjoyed a very successful professional career across Canada and the US. After his professional hockey career was over Stan "Steamer" and Colleen and their family returned to Lethbridge where Stan worked for the Lethbridge Brewery and then the Alberta Brewers Agents. This allowed Stan to continue playing hockey, where he played for the Lethbridge Maple Leafs, Medicine Hat Joyline Blades, Taber Chefs and other local hockey teams. It was while working for the ABA and playing for these hockey teams that he made many lifelong friends. Stan will forever be remembered for his sense of humor, integrity, loyal friendships, and his love of family. We will also remember him for his love of carpentry and staining, silver white hair and his sense of style. Stan was predeceased by his parents, his mother and father-in-law Clifford and Faun Peterson, 5 sisters, one infant brother, an infant great grandson, and 5 brother-in-laws. A celebration and tribute to Stan's life will be held on Saturday May 3, 2008 at 11:00 am at The CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS, Lethbridge Stake Centre, 2410-28 Street South (Enmax Centre), with Bishop Ken Dahl officiating. Friends and relatives may meet the family at the church on Friday ONLY May 2, 2008 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm. Interment in the Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge. Many thanks to Dr. Ken Dahl, Dr. Ernie Janzen, Gerald Morton, and all the staff at the Raymond Hospital and Magrath Good Samaritans for their kindness and loving care. In memory of Stan donations may be made to the Good Samaritans Society, Box 550 Magrath, Alberta T0K 1J0.
