PATRICIA JOAN PRENDERGAST POWERS - after 79 years passed from this world on Monday, April 19, 2010, to join the love of her life, her husband, Bob Powers, and her son, Tim, and sister, Michele Lockhart of North Vancouver, all of whom predeceased her. Pat was born in Red Deer, Alberta July 5, 1930 and lived her early life in Claresholm. Her adult years were spent in Lethbridge, and Vauxhall; returning to Lethbridge in 1980. Pat is survived by her sister, Maureen Thomas of Claresholm; brother-in-law Don Lockhart of North Vancouver; brother-in-law and sister-in law Jim and Marie Powers of Lynnwood, Washington; her children: Beth (Ross) Trimble (daughter Elisa Garcia); Rob (Elizabeth) Powers; Kathy (Ron) Shigemi (daughters Kiyomi (Tyler Theberge) and Mariko (Anders Olson)); Phil (Grace) Powers; daughter-in-law Doris Powers (sons Timothy & Michael); Mark (Nesta Davies) Powers. In addition, Pat is survived by her most beloved great grandchildren: Aydan Powers, and Taylor & Kiera Theberge. Pat began reading at the age of three years, when her father grew tired of always "reading to her". It is no wonder that her life-long passion for literature directed her future path. Pat Powers initiated, opened and volunteered to operate an adult library in Vauxhall. She served on the Taber Hospital Board; University of Lethbridge Board of Governors and Senate. After driving from Vauxhall to Lethbridge over a four-year period, she graduated from the University of Lethbridge with a Bachelor Degree in English. Pat was a reporter for the Taber Times, wrote a weekly column for the Lethbridge Herald in her younger years, and later became a full-time reporter for the Herald. She was also the "answer lady" (Information Services) for the Lethbridge Public Library and spent many hours volunteering to read for the "shut-in program". Pat will always be remembered as an intelligent, loving and good person; someone who respected and treated everyone well, even if their opinions received a less favourable audience. She spent her adult years attempting to teach her children to be decent people, accept others, and appreciate the human diversity of the world. Pat's family gives special thanks to the staff in St. Michael's Care Facility; to Dr. A. L. McPherson; and the caring staff members in the West Wing of St. Therese's Villa. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 24th at 11:00 a.m. at GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME at the corner of 13th Street and 7th Avenue North. A private interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the charity of your choice.
