Treasured Wife, Mother, Grand and Great Grandmother, passed quietly away on August 6th, 2026 at the age of 91 at St. Therese nursing home, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada.

Peggy was born in Lethbridge, January 2nd, 1935 to Leith and Myrtle Johnson of Barnwell. She was the last of 11 children to finally be reunited with her family in their Heavenly home.

She grew and played happily with siblings and cousins on the Barnwell farm. She was a freckle faced redhead with a natural disposition toward friendliness and included everyone in her games. Peggy attended Taber High School where she made many lifelong friends and was a light to all who knew her. She loved to date and dance, was active in student council, a few sports, and under her mother’s tutelage, was most keenly interested in the Domestic Arts.

Upon graduation, she attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah honing her skills in Home Economics Education. There she met her husband, Calvin Columbus Hiatt of Mount Airy, North Carolina. They married in the Cardston Temple among many friends and loving family on June 13, 1956.

With teaching degrees in hand, and the beginnings of a young family, they settled in Southern Alberta where they secured teaching positions in Cardston. Peg went on to teach Home Ec. in Picture Butte, Wilson Jr. High and most notably, Lethbridge, Collegiate Institute, from where she retired. She shared her knowledge of foods, clothing and textiles, ceramics, quilting, and many other hand crafts. Her creative inspiration has blessed the lives of many students of all ages across Southern Alberta. All those who were within her sphere of influence were better for their association with her.

She was a lifelong and active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served faithfully in a variety of assigned callings that she loved. She was always willing to serve, even while juggling a busy family and demanding career.

Among her favorite callings were those spent with her husband Cal. They served a mission at the Granite Mountain Vault in Salt Lake City where she was able to implement her love of keeping Family History artifacts and genealogy records. She loved their weekly calling to the Alberta temple, as well as their self-appointed mission to serve in the St. George, Utah temple with other snowbirds.

She was a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and organized gourmet and ladies clubs with friends and colleagues. She skillfully executed grand reunions, hosted parties, weddings and other events and quietly opened her home and heart to meet the needs of many people on her own initiative, without expectation of compensation or praise. She loved to make connections of family and church ties with every new friend she met.

Peggy made a profound impact on the lives of all who knew her. She was a silent, living angel on earth and a precious jewel to us all. She has embodied the example of her Savior, Jesus Christ and always leaned on the side of mercy, forgiveness and grace while interacting with others. She has rightfully earned her mansion in Heaven and will be joyfully welcomed home by those who are waiting to receive her there.

Peggy is survived by four of her children Alan Wade Hiatt of Lethbridge, Karen Rae Hiatt Bergeson of Lethbridge, Kathy Ann Hiatt (Kevin) Thompson of North Carolina and James Dean Hiatt of Arizona. She also leaves 15 most loved grandchildren, 18 delightful great grandchildren and dozens of nieces and nephews.

Peggy is predeceased by her husband Calvin Columbus Hiatt, her eldest son Calvin Craig Hiatt, her parents Leith Ingram and Myrtle Theresa Jensen Johnson and all of her siblings and their spouses. Gayle (Phyllis) Johnson, Beth (Price) Gibb, Zola Ann (Ellis) Haws, Letha (Reed) Lamb, Dean (Betty) Johnson, Leonard Wayne Johnson, Julia (Lee) Dalton, Jackie (Karl) Farnsworth, Byron Kay Johnson, Rita (Almo) Simmons.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - 14 3 Ave E, Barnwell, AB.
