
JOSEPH HARUO TAKAHASHI, of Picture Butte, beloved husband of May (nee Shimbashi), passed away peacefully with his family at his side at the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, Sunday, August 25, 2013, at the age of 83. He is the loving father and grandfather of 4 children, 18 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. Predeceased by his parents, siblings Esther, Edward, Jack and Henry. Joe was born January 1, 1930 in New Westminster, BC to Masajiro and Kayo Takahashi(nee Soga). In 1942, he was relocated to Alberta and he spent the remainder of his youth in Magrath, where he participated in many activities with his brothers, especially enjoying baseball. After graduating from Magrath High School he attended the University of Alberta and graduated with a Medical degree in 1958. He moved his young family to Picture Butte in 1960, the year that the Picture Butte Municipal Hospital opened, and was in General Practice until 1998. He was an active member of the community, spending several years as President of the Piyami Fish and Game Association, member of the Lethridge Northern Japanese Canadian Society, a leader of the Boy Scouts of Canada, a little league coach, a Judo sensei, a member of the senior men's baseball league and a volunteer for the local high school sports teams. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in many capacities, including a member of the Bishopric and councilor in the Fort Mcleod Stake Presidency. His hobbies and skills included knitting, dutch oven cooking, creating beautiful diamond willow walking sticks, gardening, fly tying, fishing, huckleberry picking, carpentry, reading and walking. Joe especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participating in whatever activities they were involved in and looked forward to any opportunities to see his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed but we look forward to the day that we can be with him again. Friends may meet the family on Thursday, August 29 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, 703-13 Street North, Lethbridge, or at the church prior to the service from 10:00 to 10:40 a.m. The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, August 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, PICTURE BUTTE CHAPEL, 404 Willow Avenue. Interment in the Barnwell Cemetery at 2:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
