JEMIMA INGRAM MACFARLANE, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 16, 2010 in Lethbridge, Alberta at Good Samaritan's Park Meadows, at the age of 100 years. Her niece Wendy Amero was with her at her passing. She was born in Roberton, Scotland on December 2, 1909 to James and Catherine Wisely. She was predeceased by her husband Robert John MacFarlane and her two sisters Amelia Bruchet and Jeanne McCallum. She is survived by her daughter Cathy Nettleton, granddaughters Caroline Mackenzie de Korte (Osiris, great-grandson Jackson) and Jennifer Barnard (Nate), many nieces and nephews and her dear friends Barb and Larry Crofts. An ardent learner all her life, she revelled in language and poetry. She spoke fondly of her time in Hawick High School in Scotland often. Her rooms were filled with books and magazines, she always kept up to date on politics and current affairs, and was a voracious reader up until her death. In 1942 she became an officer in the CWAC, later becoming Staff Sergeant. She was one of only a few thousand Canadian women chosen for duty abroad and was decorated with 3 medals. An active woman all her life, she mountain climbed, played tennis, skated, rode horses, was a sharpshooter, cross-country skier, played badminton, travelled extensively all over the world, and walked everywhere into her nineties. She also volunteered at many elementary schools, and served with Meals on Wheels. A formidable woman with a sharp mind and keen wit, she will be missed. The family would like to thank the kind staff at Good Samaritan's and Doctors David and Cal Stewart for the excellent care they provided to her over the years. Special thanks to Wendy for being with her at the end and to Barb and Larry Crofts for being such wonderful friends. No memorial service by her request. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her honour to the Alzheimer Society of Canada online at www.alzheimer.ca or mail to 20 Eglinton Avenue West 16th Floor, Toronto, ON M4R 1K8 or to the Good Samaritan's - Park Meadows, 1511 15th Avenue North, Lethbridge, Alberta, T1H 1W2. Where'er thou wind'st by dale or hill, All, all is peaceful, all is still, As if thy waves, since time was born, Since first they rolled upon the Tweed, Had only heard the shepherd's reed, Nor startled at the bugle-horn.
