Herbert Ellerman

HERBERT (HERB) ELLERMAN, beloved husband of Marion, passed away peacefully at Edith Cavell Care Centre in Lethbridge on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at the age of 79 years. He is the loving father of: Susan (John) Shores of Vulcan, Jerry (Donna) Ellerman of Lethbridge, Joanne (Greg) Cowan of Sundre, Bob (Lorna) Miller of Coaldale, and Gail Miller of Lethbridge. He leaves behind 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Herb is also survived by a brother James (Mary) Ellerman of Prince Albert, SK, a sister Jean Pennington (Tim Jones) of Calgary, and numerous nieces and nephews. Herb was predeceased by his first wife Shirley, parents Charles and Frances, and a sister Evelyn Schapansky. Herb was born on July 14, 1928 at Regina, SK and raised at Prince Albert, SK. In his youth he worked with his Dad in his wood-cutting business until moving to Lethbridge in 1949. He became employed at Lethbridge Appliances. In 1951 he married Shirley Shield and they were blessed with 3 children. Herb loved motorcycling, scuba diving and flying. He obtained his pilot's license in 1970 and spent many hours in the air in his first plane, a Cessna 170 and later in his Mooney. In 1974 Shirley passed away. In 1975 Herb purchased the business, now known as Herb's Appliances. A year later, in 1976 he married Marion Miller of Vauxhall. Herb retired from the appliance business in 1987, and his son Jerry took over. Herb was a past member of the Lethbridge Flying Club, the Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch and the Picture Butte Golf Club. He and Marion enjoyed the retirement years flying, golfing and traveling. He also enjoyed walking his dog Sam in the coulees. Herb's loved ones and friends will always remember his dry wit, his whistling, and his inventiveness. When Alzheimer's struck, he endured it with patience and fortitude. He always remained a gentleman and kindly person. The family wishes to acknowledge all the Care persons who assisted in his final years, both at home and in Care facilities as well as his attentive Doctors. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, January 7, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at ST. AUGUSTINE'S ANGLICAN CHURCH, 411-11 Street South, Lethbridge, with Rev. Canon James Robinson officiating. Interment in Mountain View Cemetery, Lethbridge. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
