
H. MELVIN JUBBER, beloved husband of Elaine Joyce Jubber, passed away, surrounded by his family, in Lethbridge at the St. Therese Villa on Friday, February 3, 2012 at the age of 88 years. Melvin is survived by his wife Elaine, and their children Vernon (Janet) of Lethbridge, Gary (Ann) of Salt Lake City and Delcia Mullen (Paul) of Calgary, sister-in-law Beryl Shoekel of Lethbridge, sister Stella Crane of San Bernardino, 17 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Melvin was born on March 7, 1923 to Charles Henry Jubber and Ella Maud Green in East London, South Africa. As a young student, he won several distinguished awards, particularly in the area of mathematics. As a teenager, he enlisted in the South African armed forces and served in North Africa and Italy in the Engineer Corps during the Second World War. On July 31, 1948 he married Elaine Joyce Shoekel in East London, South Africa. He worked for seventeen years as a fitter and turner for the South African Railways. In 1957, he and his family immigrated to Canada and settled in Lethbridge. He worked as a machinist and draftsman. In 1961 he was selected as one of the original instructors for the newly formed Lethbridge Junior College, and after attending the University of Alberta, taught drafting, English and mathematics at the Community College for 28 years. He was the Director of Technical Vocational Education at the college for several years. He received a Masters degree in education from Brigham Young University in 1971, excelling in the study of statistics. He loved teaching and was much beloved by his many students. Melvin was an active member of the LDS church and served in many callings, including bishopric, high council and employment missionary. He especially loved his years of service at the Alberta Temple. Melvin was a marvellous husband and father, totally devoted to his family and his faith. He loved playing the piano and violin, but most of all spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at St. Therese for their kindness and devotion through a difficult time. Funeral service will be held at the Lethbridge Stake Centre, 2410-28 Street South on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. Friends may meet with the family from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral service at the Stake Centre. Interment to follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.
