EUNICE HARDY SHIELDS, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully at Raymond, Alberta on February 7, 2009 - on her 92nd birthday. She was preceded by her husband Reed L. Shields in 1986, son David in 1946, and granddaughter Eda in 2000. Born February 7, 1917 at Stirling Alberta, Eunice was the youngest daughter of five children born to Raymond and Mary (Clark) Hardy both of whom as teenagers were part of the initial 1898-99 pioneer settlement of Stirling. Eunice's brother Lyman & Mildred (Litchfield) Hardy of Stirling recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Her sister-in-law Dora (Shields) & Harold Bennett reside at Lethbridge. Eunice and Reed were married in the LDS Temple at Cardston on December 15, 1937 and are the parents of six children - Clair (Rochelle) Shields of Calgary, Carroll (Vic) Penner of Victoria, Ian (Arda) Shields of Salmon Arm B.C., David Shields, Alaine (Roland Richard) Maw of Dillon Montana, and Robert (Kay) Shields of Glendale Arizona. Eunice has a posterity of 27 grandchildren and 75 great grandchildren. As her family, we celebrate her life - we applaud her gentle, kind and ever-giving exemplary motherhood and express gratitude for that loving legacy. Her personal commitment to healthful living and self reliance enabled her to remain in her own home during her 23 years of widowhood. There she hosted continual visits from family and friends and tended her yard and garden. Weekly trips to the Cardston Temple with community neighbors were delightful outings until a severe stroke immobilized her in June 2008. At this time, we publicly thank the doctors and nurses of the Raymond hospital who cared for her, acting with respect, diligence, compassion and skill. During her lifetime Eunice participated in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints extending the commitment of her progenitors of three generations to her own successional three generation posterity. Eunice served as class instructor and administrator in child, youth and adult organizations in her church. Jointly with her husband Reed (following retirement) they served five years at the LDS Cardston Temple and subsequently proselyted as fulltime missionaries in the San Diego, California mission. Eunice was also a genealogist who published family histories, researched family roots and engaged in the French extraction program. Friends may meet the family prior to the Service at the church on Saturday from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the service. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS, Knight Street Chapel, Raymond with Bishop Ron McMullin officiating. An extended family luncheon in the Cultural Hall after the service will precede the Interment in the Cardston Cemetery.
