DOUGLAS HARVEY HARTLEY, beloved husband of Helen Hartley, passed away peacefully at home with his wife by his side, on Monday, May 17, 2010. Doug was born August 16, 1935, to Harvey Hirst Hartley and Mary Elizabeth Oler Hartley of Stirling. Doug attended school in Stirling and participated in softball, baseball, basketball and hockey. He was a very good softball pitcher, and his left handed pitch was hard to hit. After high school he served a mission in South Africa. Even on his mission he pitched softball for the Pretoria Stars. Upon returning from South Africa he married his high school sweet heart, Helen Michelsen and they lived in Stirling where Doug farmed with his father. In 1964 they left the farm and Doug attended university in Lethbridge and Calgary and became a school teacher. The family lived in Lethbridge and he taught there for several years. They later moved to the family acreage near Stirling and he taught in the Stirling School. In the LDS Church he several as a Scout Master, Elders Quorum Pres, Bishop, Temple Ordinance Worker, Young Men's Pres., and numerous other callings. Doug loved sports and coaching youth in various sports. He loved to dance and was an excellent ballroom dancer. Doug has been a member of the Stirling Lions Club for many years. As a Lion he enjoyed serving in his community and the friendship of the club. He is survived by: his wife, Helen Hartley. children: Julie Broadhead, Keith (Margie) Hartley, Calvin (Veronica) Hartley, David (Lynne) Hartley; 17 grandchildren;10 great grandchildren; sister Thelma Perrett; brother-in-law Thayne Sillito; and numerous nieces and nephews. Doug is predeceased by his sister Evelyn (Thayne) Sillito. Friends may meet the family on Friday evening, May 21 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the LDS Knight Street Chapel, Raymond, or prior to the funeral service on Saturday from 1:00 to 1:45 p.m. at the church The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS, Knight Street Chapel, Raymond, with Bishop Robert Baker officiating. Interment in the Stirling Cemetery, Stirling, AB.
