Brian was my best friend. We loved being together. We had our ups and downs but always came out the other side still friends and still in love. Whatever Brian did, he did it 100%. When we first got married we belonged to a 10 pin bowling league. Brian even went a couple of times down to big tournaments in the States. He was pretty good. Then we took up roller skating, the old fashioned kind with 4 wheels on each corner. We learned how to dance on roller skates. One of our favourite places to go was the roller rink. I couldn’t golf worth a darn but I was a darn good chauffer with a golf cart. I’m so glad I had one more trip with him around the course on the Tuesday before he died. One thing that we discovered we could do together was play pool. He even surprised me a few years ago and bought us both pool cues. He was pretty good too. Always beat me unless I got a fluke.
He loved getting together with people whether it was to play board games for a party or family dinner or just to chat. He was my people person. His memory was so good he could recognize people he hadn’t seen for over 35 years. A little story about that. When we were in Toronto we were in one of the malls and all of a sudden he starts pointing and walking faster. I see this other guy on the opposite side of the mall hall doing the same thing. They came together and both of them said each other’s name. Last time they had seen each other was in Grade 6. This was 35 years later. He remembered almost everyone he met. Sometimes even people that had just held a door open somewhere for him. I was always in awe at his memory. I’m going to be so lost without him. He was my people memory. So please forgive me if you see me one day and I act like I don’t know you or I don’t remember your name. I probably don’t, Brian did that for me.
When we moved out here from Toronto so many years ago he fell in love with Alberta, especially Lethbridge. Even though we moved up north and lived in Edmonton for a few years he loved Lethbridge and when the company he was working with closed their doors in Alberta and the opportunity came for us to come back here he said let’s go. He came on faith with no job but soon found a home at Sunlife. He loved that place and the people there. He was always organizing activities and pot lucks and things like that. For just over the last year he has been working from home. It was so nice when he could come out and he would tell me about some of the calls he had that day. Some of them were pretty funny, but some were heartbreaking. He was able to put people at ease in so many situations. He had this ability to just fit in anywhere he went. He was always happy to help with whatever he could. I already miss those little evening talks about his work.
Thank you all for being his friends. So with a very sad heart I have to say good bye for now, my love. Give your mom and dad and my mom and dad a hug from me. I will see you on the other side.
Your eternal love,
Orla.
