Patricia Graveland (Schmaltz)

     PATRICIA GRAVELAND (SCHMALTZ), beloved wife of the late Cory Graveland, passed away peacefully in Lethbridge on January 7, 2019 at the age of 96 years.

     Patricia Graveland (Schmaltz), was born Patricia Gilbert on Nov. 14, 1922. It happened unexpectedly in Enumclaw, Washington, while her parents Gil and Norah were on their way to a job in Los Angeles. The family eventually moved back to Canada and despite spending the first eight years of her life in the U.S., she was Canadian and used to brag she had the papers to prove it.

      She met her future husband Cory Graveland as a girl after her father took a job running a grain elevator in Whisky Gap.

      Pat spent most of her life in southern Alberta which included time at a Catholic boarding school in Calgary along with her sister Sheila. She married her first husband, Allan Freiday in 1942 and had one son, Raymond, before getting divorced. Pat worked as a bank teller in Lethbridge before moving to Del Bonita after marrying Cory.

      She was predeceased by her husband Cory, who died in 1982, her husband George Schmaltz in 2011, her daughter Kay Scattergood, who passed away in 2009 and her son Raymond in 2003.

      Pat was outspoken, funny and fiercely supportive of her family and friends. She was an active member of the community and enjoyed baking and quilting. She was especially proud of her work on the book 'Heritage of the High Country: A History of the Del Bonita and Surrounding Districts'.

     She is survived by her sons Doug (Marsha), Bill (Barbara Jean) and grandchildren Trish Fleming (An'Twan), Nick Scattergood (Leanne), Aurora Graveland-Daines (Amanda) Sherri Pawlyszyn, Erin Quinteros, Jill Pontarolo (Bryce) and several great grandchildren.

     A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 11, 2019 at 2:30 p.m. at Christensen Salmon Generations Funeral Home, 703 – 13 Street North, Lethbridge.
