Magdalena Berg Obituary

Magdalena Berg (née Lang) passed away peacefully on December 19, 2018 at the Sunny South Lodge in Coaldale, AB at the age of 90 years.

Magdalena was born on August 3, 1928 in Yugoslavia, in the German settlement of Neu-Pasua (Nova Pazova), to Adam and Magdalena Lang. She had a happy childhood, but in 1944 during World War 2 her family and the rest of the German inhabitants of Neu-Pasua were forced to evacuate their homes and flee to Austria. Magdalena’s father and older brother Adam were killed during this time, but she, her mother, and her little brother Herbert continued their journey from Austria to Hungary, and eventually to safety in Germany where they were reunited with her brother, Tony. They arrived in Karlsruhe, Germany in March 1946 and for the first time in years she felt safe and free.

On her second day in a refugee camp near Karlsruhe, Magdalena met her future husband John Berg. John and Magdalena were married on October 25, 1947. They immigrated to Canada with their infant son John in 1949, settling in Coaldale, Alberta. Together, they rebuilt their lives and added six more children to their family. They lived in Coaldale until their passing.

Magdalena was a member of the Coaldale Mennonite Brethren Church where she served and worshipped faithfully for many years.

Magdalena is survived by her large and loving family. Her children John (Rolly) Berg, Edmund Berg, Esther (Allan) Friesen, Ruth (Ray) Braun, Wanda (Arno) Doerksen, Clemence Berg, and her son in law Ronald (Linda) Clark.  She also leaves behind 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren

Magdalena was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 69 years, John Berg, as well as her eldest daughter Velma Clark, her son in law David Quapp, and her great-granddaughter Madison Rose Doerksen.

Magdalena was a warm, kind, loving, prayerful, and strong woman of deep faith. She will be dearly missed by her family.

Magdalena’s family would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank Dr. John Geers and Dr. Justin Steed for their dedicated care of our Mom. We would also like to thank the staff of the Sunny South Lodge for the kindness, compassion, and care that Mom received there.

The Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Coaldale Mennonite Brethren Church, 2114 18 Street, Coaldale, AB with Pastor Gary Burke officiating.
