Gerald Litchfield Obituary

Gerald Wayne Litchfield
October 31, 1932 – November 25, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald Wayne Litchfield on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at the age of 93. Gerald was born on October 31, 1932, in Raymond, Alberta, to Ernest and Minnie (Burrows) Litchfield, and from the beginning carried a quiet strength and gentle goodness that would define his life.
Gerald is lovingly remembered by his four children: Mark (Jo-Lynn) Litchfield of Lethbridge, Sharon (David) Heath of Calgary, Gayle McIntyre of Barnwell, and Bryan (Laurie) Litchfield of Lethbridge. He was a proud and devoted grandfather to 17 grandchildren, 44 greatgrandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and his two sisters; Josephine (Jim) Winterton of Provo, Utah and Maureen (Bob) Baird of Anaheim, California.

Gerald is predeceased by his beloved wife, Velma (Austin) Litchfield, and their son Daryl Litchfield.
Raised in Raymond, Gerald was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout his life. After serving a mission in England and Ireland, he settled in Lethbridge, where he met the love of his life and eternal companion, Velma. Together, they built a family rooted in faith, service, and unwavering devotion to one another. Gerald worked for many years in the retail grocery industry as a meat cutter with Dominion Stores and Safeway. His career later led him to the UFCW and eventually to the Appeals Commission for Workers’ Compensation, where he served as manager. His mother often called him her “peacemaker,” a title he earned through a lifetime of solving problems with patience, compassion, and integrity. Even after retiring from Workers’ Compensation at age 78, Gerald was not one to slow down. He accepted a position with Alberta Health as a People’s Representative, faithfully participating in hearings until he was 82. After completing that service, he devoted himself to indexing for the Church, spending three hours each day at his computer until the program transitioned to AI. His commitment to meaningful service never faltered.
A devoted servant of the Lord, Gerald held many callings throughout his life. He served in the Seminary program for more than 20 years, and as a Seventy, a member of the High Council, and as Bishop in the Lethbridge area. He worked closely with Indigenous communities and was deeply honoured when the Blood Council of the Blood Reserve recognized him as an Honorary Chief, bestowing upon him the name Chief Eagle Flag, and upon Velma the name Elk Woman. Following his service as Bishop, Gerald was called again to the High Council in the Lethbridge East Stake, where he played a key role in overseeing the construction of six church buildings in the Lethbridge region.
Gerald cherished his wife with a rare and abiding love. Knowing how deeply she missed her homeland of Australia, he ensured she was able to return home many times ,more than nine trips; despite limited means. In doing so, he came to love Australia every bit as much as she did. Gerald’s life was a testament to kindness, devotion, humility, and service. His gentle spirit, warm heart, and unwavering faith touched all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love that will be cherished always.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were blessed to share in his life.
