Brian Moore Obituary

Brian was born on the 19th of October 1936 in West Norwood, London, England.  He was the youngest child of George Robert Moore and Jessie Edith Cook.  He had one brother, Raymond; and two sisters – Hilda and Doris.  He was almost 10 years younger than his youngest sister.

His father worked for the Peek Freans Biscuit Company as an accountant.  A benefit of his job was being able to bring a bag of broken biscuits home to his family almost every night.  Brian always looked forward to those biscuits.

World War II broke out just before he turned 3 years old.  He could still visualize the culvert-like bomb shelter buried in their back yard.  Another memory of the war was waking up one morning to see that a house in their cul-de-sac had been bombed during the night and was completely gone.  Brian observed that as the bombers flew over the city, they seemed to hover in the sky when they passed over the area where he lived.

One day he was playing soccer in the park with his friends.  He had a distinct feeling that they needed to go home.  Just as he reached the front door of his house, the bomb raid siren went off.  As the bombing continued, some time later they were evacuated from their home for about six months.

At the age of seventeen, Brian began an apprenticeship in Scientific Instrument Making.  One day he came home and told his family that he had plated a surgical knife that was over 12 inches long.  This was just a few days before his sister was going to have her appendix removed.  He was always quite the jokester.

He married Kathleen Delahunty in 1959.  They had two children, Steven and Peter.  They divorced and he lost all contact with them when he immigrated to Canada in 1970.

He arrived in Montreal and then traveled by train to Melville, Saskatchewan where he began working for CN Rail.  He slept upstairs in the train station and ate at the local diner.

While living in Melville, he would drive to Regina to continue with one of his passions – Ballroom Dancing.  There he met a young lady who introduced him to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  After he was baptized, he was soon given the calling of Branch Clerk.  He later became a counsellor in the Branch Presidency.

Brian later moved to Calgary where he met Janice Nilsson, a single mother with three children:  Michael, Barbara and Michelle.  They were married on December 22, 1973.  They moved around between Calgary, Lethbridge and Raymond.  This marriage also ended with a divorce.

In 1992, while serving as a Single Adult Leader, Brian met Karen Duell, a single mom with three sons: Wayne, Matthew and Jeremy. He followed the prompting he had to “Dance with Karen” and they have been dancing together for over 32 years.  They were married in the Cardston Alberta Temple on August 13, 1992.

After their marriage, Brian moved to Airdrie, where Karen was living.  They began saving for a home and moved into it the following year in September.  They lived there until they both retired and then moved to their current home in Lethbridge.  They immediately built a garage and got settled into their new home and began preparing to serve a mission.

Together they served a 2-year mission in the Cauayan Philippines Mission from June 2002 until August 2004.  They also served as Ordinance Workers in the Cardston Alberta Temple for 19 years which included 2 years before their mission and 17 years after they returned from their mission.

When they returned from their mission, they got to work finishing the basement of their home by adding a Family Theatre Room, Bathroom, Laundry Room, Bedroom, Furnace Room, Home Office and an understairs storage space.  He was his own handyman.

They enjoyed camping and hiking.  Together they hiked most of the trails in Waterton Park except Crypt Lake and the Tamarack Trail.

Brian loved classical music and acquired an extensive collection of music and a terrific sound system to play them on.

Brian was also very involved in Family History and learning more about his ancestors.  As a result of that interest, Brian and Karen served at the Family History Centre for many years.

Brian’s other interests included gardening, both flower and vegetable gardens.  He especially liked to grow Dahlias.  He also tried his hand at making sausages and bacon with great success.

Brian officially became a Citizen of Canada April 27, 2012.  When the Judge asked what took him so long, he replied: “I couldn’t eat with a fork!”

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
