Robert Mikado Obituary

Robert Shiyoso Mikado passed away at the Raymond Hospital Thursday, September 20, 2018 at the age of 90.

He was predeceased by his wife Sue, daughter Betty Jane, parents Masakichi & Tsutayo, five of his brothers, sisters and their spouses- Joan Mikado, Mark & Kay Mikado, Mary & John Nagata, Martha & Phillip Murakami, Sam & June Mikado. Also, niece Elaine Gregor, nephews Don & Steve Murakami, Tom Cork, Don & Karen Mikado.

He is survived by his daughter Judy and his brother Doug & wife Susie.

He was born April 19, 1928 at Ganges on Salt Spring Island, B.C. In 1942, his family was moved to Magrath with the Japanese evacuation from the west coast. Shortly after his arrival at the age of 14 he got a job delivering groceries in a horse drawn cart for Mr. Sabey. After working five years hoeing sugar beets he learned how to cut meat and was a butcher, later a grocery manager at the Magrath Trading Company for 39 years.

A year after his retirement in 1981, he managed the Magrath golf course restaurant and lounge for one year. During his years as a Magrath resident he was Town Councilor, President of the curling club and board member of the golf course. At 8 A.M. Monday through Saturday you would find him at the senior center for a few games of crib with Larry and Ewald. He was also a regular at the Wednesday night senior supper.

He was a member of the Championship Japanese Evaks Baseball Team, an avid curler and was deeply touched and surprised to be given a lifetime membership to the Magrath Curling Club. He was still golfing 3 times a week at the age of 89 years. He played over 54 different courses in his lifetime, but home was always the best. He enjoyed the comradery of old friends and new acquaintances. In his spare time, he liked to go trout fishing, play a few slots at the casino, sitting outside visiting with his neighbors.

At his request there will be no funeral service. Please no Koden and any donations to be made to the charity of your choice.
