Helmut Fritz Erich Guenther

    Helmut Fritz Erich Guenther, beloved husband of Germaine Smith Guenther passed away quietly and peacefully on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at the Southwood Hospice in Calgary, AB.

    Helmut was born June 10,1928 in Breslau, Silesia, Prussia to Georg Guenther and Martha Messal. He married Waltraut Speth December 21, 1950 in Berlin Germany and immigrated to Canada the following year.

   In 1953, they moved to Lethbridge, AB where Helmut became a Journeyman Carpenter. A lifelong learner, Helmut worked towards gaining a high school diploma, and after receiving a bursary from the Calgary School Board, attended the University of Alberta. At the age of 42, he began teaching building construction at Lord Beaverbrook High School in Calgary in 1970. He completed his B. Ed in 1973 and went on to complete a diploma in Vocational Counselling. In 1981, he transferred to Western Canada High School where he taught until his retirement in 1993.

    Besides his wife Germaine, Helmut is survived by his son Ralph (Norma), daughters Evelyn Baker and Ingrid (Robert) Steele, 13 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren with 3 more to be born this year. He is also survived by Germaine’s family who have shown him great kindness and respect these past 10 years.

    Helmut is predeceased by his wife Waltraut in 2002, and married Germaine Smith in 2008. Helmut was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully all his life and served more than 20 years in the Cardston Temple.

    Above all, he loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and rejoiced in his posterity.

   Friends may meet the family at CHRISTENSEN SALMON GENERATIONS FUNERAL HOME, on Sunday, February 4, 2018 from 7:00pm to 8:00pm.

   A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, February 5, 2018 at 1:00pm at THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS- EAST STAKE CENTER, 4105 Forestry Avenue South, Lethbridge, Alberta with Bishop Aaron Low officiating.

          A private family graveside will be held.

          In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church’s Perpetual Education Fund in memory of Helmut Guenther.
